The much-awaited monsoon finally reached the national capital on Tuesday, bringing cheers to the denizens who were braving intense heat wave for the past week. "The monsoon has reached Delhi and has also covered almost the entire country," Ajit Tyagi, Director-General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), said. The normal onset of the annual rains in the city is June 29. The city will experience showers for the next couple of days, he said, adding conditions were favourable for further advancement of monsoon to Punjab and Haryana. "But for parts of north-west Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, monsoon has covered the entire country," he said.
NEW DELHI: After the monsoon failed to keep its date with Delhi on June 29, the showers that drenched the city on Monday have meteorological officials hoping that the rainy season may be just two days away.
That is if the weather changes observed over the Gangetic plains of UP and Bihar in terms of ''cloudiness field'' continue.
''The monsoon was advancing well towards the city and neighbouring areas. But the weakness in the low pressure system over Rajasthan before June 29 led to the delay in monsoon hitting the city,'' said deputy director-general, meteorology, S R Kalsi. In the changed scenario, the met department had kept July 4 as the tentative date for the start of the rainy season..
Meanwhile, the pre-monsoon showers that lashed the city on Monday brought the minimum temperature down to 31 degrees Celsius. According to the met office, moderately strong winds blowing at a speed of 36 kmph accompanied the shower. ''Wind at this speed does not usually cause damage,'' an official said. The maximum temperature recorded on Monday was 40.4 degrees Celsius. Both the maximum and minimum temperatures were three degrees Celsius above normal. The much-awaited south-west monsoon has reached Delhi, three days before the normal date of June 29, announced the India Meteorological Department on Sunday.
The system had been advancing without a break since having set in over Kerala on May 29. Considering that active and break phases are an integral part of the system, meteorologists are waiting for a break sooner than later.
Addressing a press conference earlier this week, IMD Director General Ajit Tyagi had predicted that it could go into a weak phase during the first half of next month.
Monsoon forecast models, he said, indicated that rainfall for the country as a whole during July could be just 93 per cent of the long period average (LPA), and that for August, 94 per cent.New Delhi, July 04 — Delhi gets a relief from high temperatures with a pre-monsoon showers Sunday morning. The temperature which was hovering around high 30s were plunged to 26 degrees Celsius today morning at 10.30 am.
